Diagnosis: Handling Bad News About Your Child

The diagnosis is in and the results are anything but good.  How will you face your child?  No matter what is wrong or what the news actually means, it is up to you, the child's parents to pull together to find the best way to handle the news together. Bad news can be like an illness that creeps up out of nowhere and spreads throughout your body. Fighting it off may take a lot of hard work, but in many situations, there is nothing like a poor diagnosis to help people come together for a common cause.

Handling The Medical Aspect

With a bad diagnosis, the first thing you should do is seek out a secondary opinion.  If your child is suffering from a complex problem or a simple one, it is important to be sure that tests and interpretations of those tests are accurate. Doctors are not perfect, but even when they are, tests can be wrong. Having a second opinion is not something doctors are angered at, it shows that you want only the best for your child.

Next, if appropriate, seek out specialists to deal with your medical condition. In some cases, specialists provide a range of tools that most doctors do not have. They also come with experience. Family doctors may not have as extensive experience as a specialist does. You may also want to consider a range of professionals to provide you with experimental treatments and new medical procedure information, especially in situations where you do not have all the answers just yet.

From a medical point of view, doing these thing is all you can do. Bad news is often very difficult to hear from your point of view, but it is even more worrisome for the child.

Handling The Emotional Turmoil

A poor diagnosis is likely to cause fear deep within you. In some cases, you may be so scared that you feel unable to do what you need to do to get through this place. Parents have very unique and deeply rooted instincts, though that help them to overcome this area and allow them to find the right steps forward. First, take some time for yourself. Gather your thoughts and ideas and then approach your child.

Be calm and reassuring when speaking with your child. You may have to explain medical tests.  If they see you crying or upset, they too will be this way.  They take their cue from you. Pull yourself together long enough to provide your child with the emotional support that they need to do well in the coming moments.

Emotional help can also be important in terms of your own stability.  You may need to have help from a family friend or spiritual adviser to help you to get through these difficult times. It is not a sign of weakness, nor a sign of unprofessionalism to have this taken care of with the help of other people.  Seeking out support and guidance can help you to be more reassuring and stronger to your child, too.

Making Smart Decisions

When it comes down to it, a poor diagnosis may mean making very difficult decisions. In times like these, you may be unable to think clearly. Should you do that test?  What procedure do you want to choose?  It all can be very difficult especially when all you can think about is your child. When you are facing these situations, find a person to rely on for guidance.  Allow them to help you work through the decisions individually. They may be able to see clearer than you are.  While you need to make the decisions, they can present the information you need in a clear manner for you. They may be able to support your decision and give you the guidance you need to follow through.

There is no easy way to deal with bad news from a bad diagnosis. Your children are your life and no one prepares for such illnesses or tragedies. Yet, through the help and support of your family and with a good medical team, everyone can get through the process as best as they can, and may even find that there are better times ahead.
